Rose Flannery, a third-year student at Trinity College Dublin, is currently pursuing a degree in economics with a minor in business. She joined the Tax Technology Consulting team at Deloitte to begin her journey in the business world and expand her networking skills. Rose’s decision to apply for our summer internship was influenced by the programme's alignment with her academic focus and her personal interest in technology. At Deloitte, she found a community dedicated to personal and professional growth. From her first day, Rose has been inspired by Deloitte’s mission to ‘make an impact that matters’. My name is Rose Flannery, and I am on the Tax Technology Consulting (‘TTC’) team at Deloitte. I am entering into my 3rd year of university at Trinity College Dublin, studying Economics with a minor in Business. I applied for an internship to get a foothold in the world of business and networking. I applied for the internship at Deloitte without any hesitation because it aligned perfectly with my chosen degree pathway of economics and business and my own personal interests in technology.
For me, Deloitte is not only a sophisticated professional services firm, but also a community where every individual in the firm can grow, both personally and professionally. Deloitte's mission statement is to make an impact that matters, and everyone I’ve worked with here has done so since I first walked into the building. It motivates me to do the same. The impact my team has made on me so far has been life changing. I feel so lucky to be in a welcoming environment for my internship, learning skills, and gaining opportunities to enhance my career.

The TTC department drew me in because it strikes a delicate balance between tax, a topic I studied in college and am very interested in, and technology, which I have always been fascinated by. This combination has inspired me to learn more about the industry of consulting and about this new and upcoming service, Tax Technology Consulting. This internship has given me first-hand experience as to what my work life will be like after college. Each day I work at Deloitte, I become more certain this career path is the one for me. Tax technology is an area of tax that few people know much about, but it is a business unit allowing you to leverage advanced technologies to streamline tax compliance and reporting processes, making them more efficient and accurate. My knowledge of economics and my strong interest in technology allow me to utilise my own skillset which I have developed, inside and outside the classroom.
Tax technology is rapidly evolving and gaining demand day by day, from new tools and software to digital transformation. The element of consulting within the tax department creates opportunities to provide impactful solutions to clients. As a hopeful tax technology consultant, I'm looking forward to leadership opportunities where I can shape the direction of tax technology initiatives for clients. Tax technology consulting offers a unique blend, but a delicate balance of challenges and opportunities, which greatly appealed to me because of my personal interests. I am an individual who is driven by problem solving and has a desire for continuous learning. It has been amazing to have gained a 12-week insight into my dream job as a technology consultant so early in my career.
I'm looking forward to leadership opportunities where I can shape the direction of tax technology initiatives for clients.
My most memorable experience is the very first day I walked into the office after my 2-day induction training. I walked in with a mix of nervousness and excitement, and I saw a glimpse of my future. I felt the welcoming atmosphere and an inclusive, helpful environment. I saw new, happy faces and great minds at work. I met people who I was eager to meet. Before my internship, I had never been in a corporate environment, so I took a deep breath and threw myself into this wonderful experience as I was given a tour of the office and introduced to the Tax Technology Consulting team. I felt overwhelmed in the best way possible. The work I had done in college was all around me, from the late nights in the library to the extracurricular business society activities, and gradually, the apprehension became confidence.
I am confident the skills I am learning over the course of my internship will position me well to grow my career in this dynamic and evolving field.
Deloitte has supported my growth in so many ways. The interns had 2 days of induction training where we learned about Deloitte as a whole, the departments, and what was expected of us, as well as learning more about ourselves and the other interns. So far, I have completed a “Business Chemistry” and a “LinkedIn & Branding” Skills4Life workshop. These workshops prepare us to go from student life into professional services. “Business Chemistry” is an initiative developed by Deloitte to improve business relationships and teamwork. At the LinkedIn & Branding workshop, I learned the importance of using your skills to develop your own personal brand and using them to tell your story. In tax or any service line, it is important to be yourself in such a rapidly changing market. We learned that all your experience and skills add up to get you to your target position.
Throughout this internship, I am learning many new skills and aim to improve constantly. I am lucky to have chosen a career path offering quite a unique opportunity to develop a diverse set of skills to combine tax with technology proficiency, consulting, and client-serving skills. I hope to continue broadening my understanding of these areas.

Under technical skills, I am becoming familiar with ERP tools, Gen AI and software for tax. With tax, I continue to develop advisory skills on tax regulation. In the consulting process, I am enhancing my ability to identify issues and learning to develop effective solutions. With a combination of these skills, I hope to learn how to be the best tax technology consultant I can be. As I settle into life at Deloitte, learning and growing both professionally and personally, I am confident the skills I am learning over the course of my internship will position me well to grow my career in this dynamic and evolving field.
During my internship, I hope to be as valuable to the team as they are to me. I contribute to brainstorming sessions and have demonstrated a willingness to learn. I plan to use this enthusiasm to take initiative, learn new tools and technology, and contribute the knowledge I have gained in college to share my insights and participate actively within the team. As an individual, I have a meticulous attention to detail, and I hope to use this in the workplace in all areas, but specifically to reduce errors, enhance the quality of deliverables, and learn as much as possible to make the most of the 12 weeks as they fly by.
A piece of advice I would give to a future intern is to ask as many questions as possible and to not let fear stop you. My team has been so understanding and helpful, even when I ask questions, and they have gone above and beyond to help me work to the best of my ability and ensure I enjoy my 12 weeks here at Deloitte.
