David Savage is an chemist by training and I completed by PhD in 2003 from DCU. I then joined the Irish Civil Service and worked in the Customs section of the Irish State Lab for 15 years. There I provided an analytical and advisory service to Irish Customs in addition to providing representation at committees at the European Commission in addition to the World Customs Organization.
In 2018 I joined the Customs and International trade services team in BDO, where the immediate priority was to prepare Irish companies primarily in the food and beverage sector for Brexit. My time in BDO coincided with COVID-19, the Russo-Ukrainian conflict and the emergence of broad ranging sustainability legislation from the EU - all of which have had a significant influence on the world of international trade. In BDO I also became heavily involved with the EU network and delivered classification training to the BDO customs academy.
