The path to becoming an auditor: Laura Clausen

Laura Clausen holds a bachelor's degree in Business Economics from Roskilde University and subsequently completed an MSc in Business Administration and Auditing at CBS. She is part of the Audit & Assurance Private team.

“The job is so much more than just numbers. It is about understanding how businesses operate, and a great deal about communication and collaboration. It is a challenging and exciting job with varied working days, and you quickly take on responsibility and have excellent opportunities for development."
What is the best thing about being an auditor?

The great variety in tasks and the opportunity to work with many different companies and industries. But also working with people with different personality profiles, which means you are constantly learning something new and being challenged. On top of that, I think it is really great that you take on responsibility relatively early and work closely with both colleagues and clients. It gives you a sense that you are making a difference and developing both professionally and personally. And the sense of community within the team makes the work more enjoyable and meaningful.

What has the NEXT programme given you so far?

It has given me a really good and reassuring start at Deloitte. It has been a fantastic opportunity to get to know the company and colleagues better across offices – in a somewhat more informal way. It has made it easier to settle in, not least because you start alongside so many other new starters. There is both a professional and a social element to NEXT, both of which are important. You get the opportunity to try your hand at tasks and situations that leave you better equipped for the challenges that await you in the job as an auditor. It has been an important part of my start and my development.

How do you work with IT, robotics, and AI in your day-to-day work?

It is definitely a part of everyday life. We use tax robots, for example, to automate tasks such as preparing tax returns and reporting dividends, which saves time and minimises errors. Generally, there is a strong focus on integrating AI into various processes to make work more efficient and deliver better results for clients. New tools are constantly being developed, and it is something that is continually moving forward.

How do you experience support and the opportunity to ask for help?

When you start, you are assigned several different people with different roles. Among other things, you are given a coach, who plays an important role in your personal and professional development – both in terms of the professional side, but also if situations arise in your personal life where you need a little extra support or flexibility. On top of that, you are assigned a buddy, who helps you settle into the social environment and acts as a sounding board. Generally, I experience a very open and welcoming culture in the office. It is easy to reach out and get help from anyone, regardless of who you ask. It has made the transition from student life to full-time work more reassuring and more motivating.

What responsibilities have you been given in your role?

I am involved in reviewing financial statements and ensuring that everything is correct and in order. I work closely with my team, who support me along the way, but I also have my own tasks that I share responsibility for seeing through to completion. So, the opportunities for responsibility are certainly there, if you want them. It is also important to say that you yourself have a say in when you are ready to work on a task independently. You are guided along the way, and it is entirely natural to have questions – that applies to everyone.
