She helps clients to manage all aspects of their engagement with HMRC, whether through proactive voluntary disclosures and relationship building, through to enquiry resolution, ADR (mediation), and accelerated issues resolution programmes. She also acts in appropriate cases of suspected serious fraud. Annis is also chair of the ICAEW compliance & investigations committee and also regularly contributes to HMRC consultations, forums and policy discussions.
Annis assists clients in communicating appropriately with HMRC, to build co-operation with HMRC whilst protecting taxpayer privacy and reducing the chances for misunderstanding throughout the disclosure or enquiry process. Her focus is on understanding what a good settlement involves for the entrepreneur, the family or the privately-owned business and building mutual understanding between HMRC and taxpayer that has a long-reaching effect after the dispute resolution itself. All resolutions that Annis and the team reach will be Litigation and Settlement Strategy compliant and commercially pragmatic.
Her work frequently involves working alongside other advisors, whether family offices and trustees, family lawyers reputation management specialists or criminal lawyers, or with tax colleagues in other jurisdictions. As a result, she has a strong network within the Private advisor community and is able to assist clients in building their advisor team around them on high-stake issues, whether involving technically-complex fact patterns or emotive topics such as allegations of tax fraud.
