How Two global warehouse templates replaced a heavily customized WM and harmonized logistics across a worldwide network
The client is a world leader in technology and services for aggregates, minerals
processing and metals refining, headquartered in Finland. Its existing SAP ECC landscape had grown around a heavily customised WM solution that no longer fit a business operating manufacturing and distribution warehouses across many countries.
The organisation set out to replace SAP ECC by designing a solid, back-to-
standard S/4HANA with harmonised processes. As part of that program, the
decision was taken to retire the custom WM solution and move to a state-of-the-art SAP EWM, fully integrated with SAP TM within the S/4HANA project.
Replacing a custom warehouse corewith a back-to-standard S/4HANA
Deloitte created two global templates – one for the manufacturing warehouses and one for the distribution warehouses – and rolled them out through a phased approach. Each phase built confidence in the overall solution while leaving room for country-specific build where the business required it.
A Hybrid Agile approach – adaptive, agile concepts and techniques inside a traditional predictive project structure – was selected as the best fit for the client's requirements and business environment, keeping delivery aligned with how the business actually runs.
As part of the transformation, the team:
The program delivered a global logistics solution with SAP EWM and TM – that brought operational efficiency and streamlined logistics processes across the network. The two templates became the foundation for every subsequent country deployment, with pre-deployment sessions feeding new requirements back into the standard. The client gained enhanced visibility and control over its warehouse and transport operations, allowing it to standardize operations globally and to be prepared for further automation on a platform designed for long-term scalability.
Where it pays off:
From custom WM to a global logistics platform
