From Graduate to Manager: Rose Jennett on building a career in tax at Deloitte

Tax & Legal isn't always the first place students look. Rose Jennett, Manager in Deloitte Private, shares why it might be the best career move you haven't considered yet.

When Rose Jennett sent out a flurry of graduate applications in her second year of a commerce degree, tax wasn't exactly front of mind. She applied broadly, landed two offers, and found herself working in private wealth and private advisory.

She loved it.

"My dad runs a business, so I've grown up in that family business space. When I fell into it, I was like - this really suits me."

After two internships, Rose made a deliberate decision. If this was the career she wanted, she wanted to do it at the best firm in Australia. She applied for a graduate role at Deloitte, started in March 2020, and hasn't looked back since.

What a career in tax actually looks like

Deloitte Private works with high-net-wealth families and large private businesses, across accounting, tax and broad advisory work. It's a practice area that sits at the intersection of technical expertise and genuine relationship building, and for graduates who like variety, it offers a lot.

Rose's graduate year focused heavily on Australian tax through the graduate learning program - a foundation she describes as critical to everything she does now. "The knowledge foundation it builds, the exposure, the familiarity - it's kind of unrivalled."

From there, she progressed through Analyst and Senior Analyst and was promoted to Manager in January 2025. Five years from Graduate to Manager, with a client portfolio that keeps her across complex, real-world problems every day.

The knowledge foundation it builds, the exposure, the familiarity - it's kind of unrivalled.

A team that invests in people, not just output

One of the things Rose talks about most is the people around her. The culture in her team isn't just about delivering for clients - it's about showing up for each other.

"Everyone I work with is so invested in our clients and in our outcomes and in working as a team to deliver that. But equally, we bring so much excitement and generosity and openness to our social interactions."

That extends to how leadership operates, too.
"Leadership aren't just invested in output and utilisation. They're invested in me as a whole person. They want me to do my best - and they know that being in a position to do your best doesn't just mean work-life balance. It's what's your work like, but also what's your life like."

Growing - and helping others grow

Now a manager herself, Rose is deliberate about paying forward the opportunities she was given.

"Thinking about the opportunities I've been afforded - it's something I really try to enact and pass down to my juniors. I'm now actively trying to empower and trust them, to give them opportunities that helped me grow."

It's a culture of development that compounds. The graduates who come through get real responsibility early. And the people who've been through it tend to remember what that felt like.

Rose's advice if you're considering joining the team

If you're sitting on the fence about tax, or about Deloitte more broadly, Rose's take is pretty simple.

"Jump in. Absolutely go, put your name forward, be involved, have conversations with people that work here, learn about this incredible place. It is such a launch pad for so many industries, for so many styles of working."
