In the midst of the Coronavirus crisis, Deloitte people around the globe are working to connect to what matters each and every day. This story is part of a series featuring Deloitte people and the impactful work they are doing with clients and in the communities they serve.
What is the challenge?
Across India, migrant workers travel to the city looking for work. When cities across the country were locked down to reduce the spread of COVID-19, this disrupted the livelihoods of many of the most vulnerable, who were left unable to meet their basic needs. One Deloitte professional, Ankit Goel, decided to work together with friends to try to help provide food to those in Gurgaon in the National Capital Region.
How are we helping?
After seeing the impact of one meal given to a migrant worker, Ankit and his group of friends had the idea to organise an effort to combat food insecurity.
“We immediately got on the phone to see how we could best support,” says Ankit. “The very next day we already had organised our first batch of meals for delivery.” On just the first day alone, Ankit and his friends were able to feed three hundred people. As the lockdown went on, demand for meals continued to grow. Soon, Ankit and his team had delivered 250,000 meals to those in need and are still going.
One small act of kindness inspired a movement. “One meal may not matter as much to me,” says Ankit. “But it means a whole lot to the person receiving it.”
At Deloitte, we are connecting with our clients, people and communities to make an impact every day.
