For Dr. Rudzani Mulaudzi, our firm's Cloud AI & Data Leader, his journey into the dynamic world of TMT was less a calculated choice and more a discovery of purpose. It was over a decade ago when his professional path first crossed with the TMT industry, and he was captivated by its ability to create tangible change. "Seeing the practicality of how the work we do in TMT actually translates into practical, tangible impact on people's actual lives at the end of the day is quite meaningful," Rudzani reflects.

He witnessed first-hand how strategic work, like developing a multi-country scale analytics platform, translated into visible changes in the market. He realised that in TMT, innovation moves from concept to customer value at lightning speed. This understanding shaped a career that is anything but static. Today, Rudzani is known for his expertise in cloud, AI, data, and digital transformation.

The Bridge Between Academia and Industry

Rudzani's commitment to continuous learning reached a significant milestone in 2025 when he completed his PhD in Computer Science at the University of the Witwatersrand, specialising in probabilistic graphical models, a subset of AI aligned with explainable AI and generative AI fundamentals.

For him, the PhD wasn't simply academic, it was strategic. By maintaining a foot in both academia and industry over the past five years, he can see emerging technologies before they reach the market. For telecommunications companies navigating rapid AI, cloud, and data evolution, this foresight is invaluable.

"As professionals who advise clients, it's important that we continually learn and acquire expertise," he explains. His research has consistently focused on using technology to solve society's wicked problems, from early warning systems for xenophobic attacks to addressing unemployment. "Telcos naturally play in that world, they provide enabling infrastructure for us to do effective technology work to actually address and solve our country's hardest problems."

His advice to professionals considering advanced academic studies? "Figure out why you are doing it before you do it." For Rudzani, the PhD is part of his calling, a price worth paying to inspire others and ensure he remains relevant to his clients.

The Transformative Power of AI

For Rudzani, what truly drives him is working on highly impactful, business-impacting technology type of interventions for our clients, alongside a phenomenal team that pushes through challenges to deliver success. The TMT industry, he notes, demands constant self-development due to its rapid evolution and the quick integration of adjacent technologies. He navigates these challenges with an unshakeable mental fortitude to know that it actually always works out.

He is most excited about Agentic AI, seeing its potential to orchestrate customer value in a truly real-time and seamless way. He cites a compelling example of an AI bot built for a telco that could diagnose a router issue simply from a photo, helping a customer in real-time. "Imagine that - being able just to take a picture and say, 'Hey, what's actually going on here?'" he enthuses, highlighting that this is not about tech for tech, but about solving a real business need with measurable efficiency.

A Legacy of People and Tangible Change

Looking to the future, Rudzani hopes to leave a twofold legacy:

Elevating People: To have contributed to the success of executives in the industry and development of talent for the industry is the goal. "The people are the highest trophy," he shares.

Tangible Technological Impact: To be able to point back to a piece of technology that is fundamentally changing people's lives and say, "I contributed to that." He draws parallels to the consultants who could proudly reference their work on the 1994 election technology, a symbol of integration and national transformation.

Rudzani describes his journey at Deloitte as an unparalleled platform for growth, with a flat hierarchy and genuine collaboration, and notes that people literally want to make a difference. His passion for providing tangible solutions that make a real difference keeps him evolving, creating things that matter. When things matter, they create an impact.
