For Siseko Zibi, greatness isn't about following a predetermined path; it's about being adaptable and hungry enough to solve any problem that comes his way.
An Unexpected Path to TMT
Siseko's journey to becoming an Associate Director in our Strategy & Business Design team was far from linear. With a career spanning civil engineering, management consulting, and then a coincidental shift to TMT, Siseko's story is a testament to the value of adaptability.
He was initially a principal consultant at a boutique consulting firm, a close-knit environment he loved. When former colleagues encouraged him to make the move, Siseko was hesitant. "I was like, no, I don't want to be in a large institution," he recalls. But after five years, he finally made the leap.
His adaptability served him well. He was initially placed in a different industry, but a colleague saw his potential and brought him into the TMT space. "I've been in TMT since," he says. "And now I'm loving it." His career evolution highlights a core piece of advice he has for other professionals: "Be hungry for knowledge. There's no task that's too small or trivial. Do as much as you can and get involved."
Unlocking Growth in a Low-Growth Economy
As a strategist, Siseko's expertise lies in helping clients navigate a low-growth economy. His work focuses on two critical areas: identifying opportunities for revenue growth and driving cost optimisation. He helps clients think through the design of their organisations to be more efficient, leveraging technologies like AI to sense market trends and pinpoint inefficiencies.
One of the most exciting trends Siseko sees in the South African telecommunications market is the shift toward collaboration among competitors. Instead of individual companies laying fibre on the same roads, he champions the idea of infrastructure sharing to optimise capital expenditure and boost industry growth. He believes this collaborative approach is essential for the future of the industry and the country.
The Power of Lasting Relationships
This philosophy of collaboration extends to his leadership style. Siseko believes in building teams with complementary skills and trusting his colleagues. "My philosophy is that I need to surround myself with people that have complementary skills, and to not look for a replica of myself," he explains. This approach not only benefits the client, but also builds trust between team members.
For Siseko, building strong relationships with clients is about more than just a transaction. He's learned the importance of being a trusted partner, especially during difficult times. His approach involves being there for clients even when a project isn't on the table, offering support and being a reliable resource. This commitment, he says, "pays dividends later on down the line. Those relationships actually last a lot longer than the ones which are more transactional."
A Legacy of Impact
Siseko's passion for problem-solving is what keeps him engaged. "I just enjoy solving problems," he says. This drive, combined with a collaborative spirit and a focus on lasting relationships, defines his unique approach to leadership in the TMT Industry.
He is a proud family man, with roots in the Eastern Cape, and he maintains strong connections through two annual reunions that are non-negotiable. His commitment to his family mirrors his commitment to his clients and his team, he is dedicated to building and nurturing relationships that go the distance.
For Siseko, greatness is found in a career built on solving problems, forging trust, and creating a tangible, lasting impact. When there is impact, there is greatness.
