The 2025 Ministerial Symposium brought together 200 government leaders, industry decision-makers and key Stakeholders to set the tone for the Mining Indaba week in Cape Town. This year’s theme was ‘Building Unified, African Mining Value Chain – Enhancing Best practice.

Key Highlights:

Forging a unified African mining front: collaboration for sustainable development: To achieve a unified African mining sector, greater continental harmonisation is essential. This involves establishing a unified mineral policy, promoting regional economic integration, and attracting investment to develop value chains and harness Africa's mineral resources effectively. Competing with low standards to attract investment can lead to minimal returns from valuable minerals.

African mining status update: Achievements made in 2024: Collaborative efforts have advanced Africa's mining industry, focusing on safety improvements and addressing health issues. The industry aims for zero fatalities, emphasising both technical and human safety measures. Investment attractiveness is a key theme, with increased involvement from downstream actors in financing new mines, reflecting growing interest in the sector. Progress in exploration, driven by global energy transition, focuses on copper and gold.
