Supporting Merchants’ Academy

Connecting with our local community to make a difference to young people

Deloitte is proud of its community partnership with Merchants’ Academy, a school in Bristol, and is committed to positively impacting the lives of its students.

Merchants’ Academy is an all-age Academy in Withywood, south Bristol, which opened in 2008. It has over 1000 students and provides a unique opportunity for students in Bristol to join a school from reception through to the age of 18.

So far, our relationship with Merchants’ Academy has been predominantly with the sixth form, for example running interview and CV writing skills workshops for Year 13 students and offering mentoring support for Year 12 students via Teach First’s mentoring scheme.

It’s important to us to help young people overcome barriers to education and employment, giving these individuals the skills and opportunities they need to succeed.

Our people are passionate about supporting young people to achieve their potential. Armed with knowledge, experience and guidance, volunteers from Deloitte are delighted to mentor students and help them explore the world of work, think about and develop the skills they need for university or the workplace and help them determine the next steps they want to take in life.

Our volunteers serve as positive role models for students, whether as mentors or by providing essential careers advice, such as CV writing or interview skills.

For many of the young people we meet, getting exposure to Deloitte’s young, confident and vibrant professionals helps them raise their own aspirations and ambitions and can positively influence their choices and chances in life.

Our volunteers serve as positive role models for students, whether as mentors or by providing essential careers advice, such as CV writing or interview skills.

We aim to improve social mobility and support a fairer society

We are especially keen to help students broaden their horizons and explore different opportunities available to them once they’ve left school, whether seeking an apprenticeship, entering further education or gaining employment.

Many of students at the school may not have considered working for a firm like Deloitte, so our volunteers can easily provide insight into what it’s like to work in professional services.

Through our work, we aim to improve social mobility and support a fairer society by giving young people from low-income communities the ambition, skills and opportunities they need to reach their full potential and aspire to a brighter future.
