Deloitte comments on SMMT car reg figures for May 2025

Jamie Hamilton, automotive partner and head of electric vehicles at Deloitte, said:

“There’s been an uptick in new car registrations in May and while this growth is encouraging, the real story lies within the battery electric vehicle segment. The continued rise in EV registrations shows a growing consumer appetite for sustainable transport, further fuelled by the government's recent announcement to remove the need for planning applications for at home EV charging installations.

“This move, potentially saving drivers up to £1,100 annually compared to petrol or diesel cars, is a significant step towards mainstream EV adoption. However, this is aimed at people with the ability to charge their cars at home, so less attractive for those without access to off-street parking.

“Despite the growth in car sales this month, existing headwinds facing UK car manufacturers underscores the need for a robust Industrial Strategy that provides clear direction and support for the sector. This will be crucial for manufacturers to reach the Zero Emission Vehicle target, attract investment, and ensure the UK remains a competitive player in the global automotive landscape.”
