2023 January Transfer Window: Spending update from Deloitte’s Sports Business Group

24 January 2023
  • As of 1500hrs on Tuesday 24th January 2023, Premier League gross spend in the 2023 winter transfer window was £440m, according to analysis from Deloitte’s Sports Business Group.
  • With a week still to go until deadline day, Premier League clubs have already surpassed the 2018 winter window (£430m) as the highest in history in terms of gross spend.
  • Premier League gross spend for the 2022/23 season currently totals £2.4bn, with a record-breaking summer window (£1.9bn, 34% higher than the £1.4bn in 2017) now followed by the highest-ever winter window.
  • One week before the 2022 winter window closed, Premier League clubs’ gross spend was £105m and ultimately reached £295m by the end of deadline day.

Calum Ross, assistant director in Deloitte’s Sports Business Group, commented:

“With a full week to go until the deadline, January 2023 has already surpassed the record spent during any previous winter window as Premier League clubs look to reinforce their squads ahead of a crucial second half of the season.

“The 2022/23 season has seen clubs invest heavily in their squads, and to date this season Premier League clubs have spent more than £2.4 billion on player transfers. New ownership and an availability of financial resources to pay significant sums to maximise performance continue to be key contributors towards record spending levels.

“While this level of spending illustrates Premier League clubs’ recovery post-pandemic, the importance of long-term financial planning and focus on financial sustainability should continue to be a priority.”
