People Series – Rebecca Fisher

Hey Rebecca, please tell us about your career to date and what motivated you to join Deloitte just over a year ago?

My career journey has been pretty diverse so far. I started in university recruitment, then spent some time as an Officer in the British Army. After that, I moved into project management consultancy before joining Deloitte in 2023 as an Assistant Director. It felt like the perfect opportunity to combine my experience in Defence and Real Estate, tackle complex projects, and work with some fascinating clients. Plus, I was ready for a new challenge to take my career to the next level.

Tell us your view of the unique challenges facing the defence real estate?

The Defence Estate faces a unique set of challenges as it aims to become more efficient without compromising the operational resilience and agility required to navigate the ever-changing Defence landscape. One major hurdle is the legacy of historic underspend, which has resulted in an aging, complex, mixed-use estate in need of significant attention. Having experienced living and working in this environment first hand provides me a unique insight into the impact of this on our military community, and is something I always keep at the forefront of my mind when supporting Defence clients.

I think it’s also important to highlight the pressure Defence Estates are under to enhance sustainability and reduce the environmental footprint of their assets – all without disrupting critical operations and considering operational facilities alongside accommodation and workplaces that are critical for attracting and retaining talent. With no funding uplift on the horizon, resource constraints add another layer of complexity, and the Defence sector must make every penny count, carefully balancing competing priorities to ensure a sustainable and effective future for its Estate.

Reflecting on your last year, how have you found working in a new team?

It's been fantastic. I really value the opportunity to collaborate with such a diverse and experienced group of colleagues where everyone brings something unique to the table. The challenging nature of the work and the variety of projects have offered so many opportunities for growth. I also find a real sense of purpose in contributing to important public sector projects. Plus, the team's genuine commitment to inclusivity makes it a supportive and enjoyable place to work.

What advice would you give to yourself this time last year?

I'd tell myself to say "yes" to every opportunity that comes my way. Honestly, some of the best experiences I've had this year came from diving headfirst into the unknown and embracing new challenges. I’d also say make a real effort to meet as many people as possible early on and never be afraid to ask questions - as a new starter, you’re not expected to know everything from day one.
