A digital identity is increasingly needed to do business with companies and government. Control over personal data is also becoming more important, as is reducing dependence on international technology companies. With MyCheck, a coalition of Dutch organisations is working on a trusted digital identity wallet. Deloitte is one of the initiators. We believe the Netherlands becomes more digitally resilient when government, businesses and citizens work together on trusted digital services.
With MyCheck, people can identify themselves online and share personal data through a single secure digital wallet. Users decide which data they share. For an age check, for example, it is enough to show that someone is old enough, without sharing a name, an address or a full date of birth.
The wallet can also be used to log in, to submit data for an application, or to sign an agreement digitally. This can make digital transactions simpler and safer, while people have to disclose less personal data.
MyCheck aligns with the European rules for digital identity, eIDAS 2.0. These rules are meant to ensure that citizens and businesses in the EU can use and share their identity and data digitally in a reliable way.
For financial institutions, digital identity is an important part of reliable service delivery. Banks and insurers must be able to identify customers securely, and customers must be able to trust that their data is handled with care. A wallet that lets people decide for themselves which information they share can help.
A trusted digital identity is not an issue for individual organisations or government alone. How we do business digitally depends on systems, services and data exchange that cut across sectors. If that foundation becomes heavily dependent on a limited number of foreign providers, it affects all of us.
MyCheck brings together organisations from different sectors around a digital wallet that must work for citizens, businesses and government. That calls for attention to differing needs and interests. It also offers an opportunity to reduce dependence on international providers and keep more control over our digital infrastructure.
MyCheck is an initiative of ABN AMRO, Achmea, ASN Bank, Deloitte, KPN and Rabobank. A.S.R. and Nationale-Nederlanden have indicated that they intend to use the capabilities MyCheck offers. The coalition is in discussions with other parties about participation. The initiators want to make MyCheck a success together with citizens, Dutch businesses and government.
For Deloitte, MyCheck is more than a technology solution. It shows how we use our knowledge and network to address societal challenges. Digital resilience requires not only advice, but also action and responsibility. By taking steps together, we make the Netherlands more digitally resilient.
