Finance Trends 2027

Shaping the next era of stakeholder value

Malta's finance leaders face a period of significant change. As organisations navigate AI adoption, rising technology costs, evolving regulatory frameworks and geopolitical uncertainty, CFOs are being asked to do far more than manage financial operations. They are becoming strategic architects of enterprise value, responsible for shaping investment decisions, managing risk, driving cost discipline and strengthening their organisation's competitive position.

Deloitte's global Finance Trends 2027 report, based on a survey of 1,434 finance leaders across 26 countries, confirm the continued evolution of the CFO role. Finance leaders are increasingly operating in a dual capacity: leading finance transformation within their teams whilst shaping overall business strategy, investment governance and value measurement. The report identifies five critical trends reshaping finance leadership through 2027, underpinned by four core priorities that extend beyond technology.

Finance leaders are prioritising four key areas alongside AI adoption: driving enterprise cost efficiency (34 per cent), optimising capital allocation and investment decisions (33 per cent), strengthening finance's strategic influence across the enterprise (32 per cent), and enhancing organisational resilience and risk management (29 per cent). These priorities reflect a broader, more strategic view of the CFO mandate.

CFOs are no longer just reporting historic performance, they are now driving where the organisation bets, how those bets are governed, and what incremental value looks like. In Malta, this shift is well underway. A modern strategic CFO is shaping investment, growth and the organisational direction. The CFO role is becoming a CEO in waiting; combining financial discipline with strategic leadership.

The Malta CFO

Finance leaders in Malta are increasingly being positioned to lead their organisations through transformation and must ensure they have the capacity and support to take on this challenge. The convergence of AI adoption, cost pressures, regulatory complexity and tech sovereignty concerns demands a CFO who can balance innovation with discipline, ambition with accountability, and speed with governance.

“Finance leaders clearly recognise the potential of AI, but ambition alone won’t turn investment into value,” adds Fenech. “Execution will depend on trusted data, robust controls, human oversight and greater visibility into increasingly complex cost structures. The CFO’s role is to bring these elements together across the organisation to turn AI investment into measurable, sustainable enterprise value.”

Finance leaders in Malta can explore these trends in depth through Deloitte Malta's CFO Programme, which offers exclusive events, peer networking and tailored thought leadership.
