The funds sector in Malta

An overview

As a jurisdiction, Malta has established itself as the home of various funds, fund managers and other asset servicing providers, offering a versatile range of investment structures and fund products that can be tailored accordingly to meet the different needs of many fund promoters - including smaller funds and start-ups, with the net asset value of locally based funds (as at June 2022) amounting to more than 21 billion Euro.

Malta’s attractiveness as a jurisdiction of choice for the fund industry is further attributable to the innovative, flexible, yet robust regulatory environment supervised by the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA), known within the industry as a dynamic, though approachable regulator enforcing legislation within the financial services sector on the basis of transparency, good governance and proportionality. In addition, the Maltese fund sector benefits from low operational costs relative to other EU jurisdictions, particularly in terms of fund set-up and ongoing licensing fees as well as compliance costs. Malta also offers an attractive tax regime for licensed funds as well as an extensive and continuously growing double taxation treaty network.
