From fragmented reports to faster decisions: Reimagining enterprise reporting for a global mining leader

Introduction

One of the world’s largest exporters of seaborne metallurgical coal was sitting on a familiar challenge: too much reporting, too much manual effort, and not enough consistency.

Its reporting landscape had evolved into a complex web of legacy tools and ad hoc processes. The result? Duplicated metrics, inconsistent data, repetitive manual work and significant effort spent preparing executive reports, making it harder for leaders to get to the insights that mattered.

The challenge: When reporting becomes a bottleneck

The numbers told the story:

  • 73% of unique metrics were duplicated across multiple reports, creating significant redundancy and inconsistent reporting practices.
  •  Manual and inconsistent processes increased reporting effort, limited scalability and delayed access to trusted insights.

The opportunity was clear: simplify the reporting ecosystem, improve performance and give business teams back the time to focus on higher-value priorities.

The shift: Building reporting on a smarter data foundation

Deloitte worked with the client to fundamentally rethink its reporting ecosystem, moving from fragmented, manual processes to a standardised, automated and scalable data foundation.

  • Standardise the data: Reporting data was consolidated, with common definitions and business rules established to create a trusted source of information across functions.
  • Redesign the reporting engine: Optimised DataMarts were built across 7 business workstreams, reducing duplication and enabling reusable data across multiple reports and applications.
  • Automate what slows teams down: More than 40 automated data pipelines were implemented, significantly reducing manual data preparation and report generation.
  • Make performance work harder: Data flows and reporting structures were redesigned to improve processing and dashboard performance, giving users faster access to insights.
  • Put insights in the hands of the business: Centralised dashboards brought together 280+ metrics and 180 visuals across 9 critical business functions, enabling self-service access to information.

The impact: Less manual effort. More meaningful insight.

The transformation delivered measurable gains in both operational
efficiency and decision-making:

74% of manual metrics were automated, reducing reliance on manual inputs to just 13%.

500+ hours of reporting effort were saved every month, freeing teams from repetitive data preparation and allowing greater focus on analysis and business priorities.

280+ standardised metrics created consistent visibility across production, finance, HSS and other critical functions.

Centralised dashboards and improved data availability gave decision-makers faster access to trusted operational insights, supporting quicker, more informed decisions.

Reusable, governed data pipelines and DataMarts improved scalability while creating a strong foundation for future analytics and AI use cases.

From reporting exercise to decision advantage

The transformation went beyond making reporting faster. It changed the role data could play in the organisation.

With standardised metrics, automated pipelines and centralised dashboards, business leaders could spend less time reconciling reports and more time spotting trends, managing performance and acting on what the data was telling them.

The resulting data foundation also created a platform for the organisation to expand its analytics and AI capabilities over time.[

What began as a reporting transformation became something bigger: a scalable, data-driven decision-support capability, built to keep creating value long after the reports were delivered.
