Indian pharmaceutical industry survey: FY27 outlook

Introduction

India’s pharmaceutical industry has become a globally resilient sector, supported by its longstanding role as the pharmacy of the world. Today, the country ranks third globally in pharmaceutical production by volume and eleventh by value. The ecosystem comprises over 3,000 firms and 10,500 manufacturing units, with an estimated 60,000 generic brands across 60 therapeutic categories, accounting for nearly 20 percent of global supply by volume. The industry is at a pivotal inflexion point, driven by digital transformation, advanced R&D and expanding global opportunities, while navigating near-term challenges, such as geopolitical tensions, supply chain disruptions, pricing pressures and evolving regulatory requirements. Deloitte India’s report examines how leading pharmaceutical companies are preparing for the next phase of growth. The outcomes are based on insights from a survey of CXOs at Indian pharmaceutical firms conducted in H1 2026, with annual revenues exceeding INR10,000 crore.
