The economic and social value of ABC-commissioned screen productions

This report, prepared by Deloitte Access Economics, estimates the economic contribution of ABC-commissioned screen productions and examines their broader impact on audiences and communities.

From regional communities to global audiences, Australian stories play a powerful role in shaping identity, connection and our nation’s image. In a rapidly changing media landscape, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) continues to play a critical role in bringing these stories to life.

The research, an update to a 2021 Deloitte Access Economics report, assesses the economic and social contribution of ABC-commissioned screen productions. The analysis highlights the ABC’s position - not just as a broadcaster, but as a catalyst for the screen sector, supporting creative talent, sustaining local production, and ensuring Australian voices remain visible in an increasingly globalised market.

Between 2022–23 and 2024–25, ABC-commissioned productions contributed $772 million to the Australian economy and supported over 7,700 full time equivalent jobs, while attracting additional co-investment from across the industry. These productions reach around 5.4 million Australians each week and included 1,526 hours of locally produced Australian content.

Beyond the numbers, the ABC’s commissioning activity supports a diverse pipeline of Australian stories, reflecting regional perspectives, elevating underrepresented voices, and connecting audiences across the country. Its content is widely recognised as distinctly Australian and plays an important role in building national identity, and supporting the wellbeing and development of younger audiences through high-quality children’s content.
