Optimal Reality®

The team that builds and runs the operational systems organisations depend on - for the physical world, at AI speed.

Transport networks, energy grids, mines, utilities and emergency operations are changing faster than ever. Optimal Reality is Deloitte’s specialist team for the hardest of these operational challenges: we design, build and run the live decision and simulation systems that control rooms rely on - then stay to operate them.

What we do

Optimal Reality builds operational decision and simulation systems for the physical world - the kind of software that takes in live data from across a network, shows what is happening now, predicts what happens next, and helps operators make the best possible call in real time.

Our roots are in digital twin techniques pioneered in Formula 1 racing: creating an advanced digital replica of the physical networks a business operates within, and running millions of possible scenarios to make better, faster decisions.

How we engage

Why clients work with us

The operational problems we take on are the hard ones: live, complex, and unforgiving of mistakes. AI has made parts of the work faster and more accessible, but the difference is in bringing the whole picture together:

Many teams can show what's possible in a demo. The harder step is making it dependable enough for a control room to trust - and that's where we do our best work.

Inside an Optimal Reality system

Whatever the sector, the systems we build give operators the most advanced view of what is happening in real time, through a single mission-control interface. That typically includes:

  • A holistic picture drawn from a wide range of data sets - including hard-to-instrument areas like weather and new sensing technologies
  • Inference into network “dark spots,” so you can see what is happening where instrumentation is thin - and decide where to add more
  • Prediction of what happens next, using AI and physics-based simulation to optimise the networkAI and computer vision applied to visual data streams - more efficiently and accurately than a human can
  • Experimentation and scenario planning to inform operational decisions before you commit to them
  • A shared environment where teams act on events together in real time, shortening the time to resolve an issue
  • A central hub where every party can review the impact of decisions, enabling continuous learning

These systems combine historical and real-time data, and are engineered to a high cyber-security standard - including IRAP-assessed architectures and DevSecOps practices with predictive, proactive monitoring - because they are built to run live.

A vision for a connected reality

Where we focus

We take on the genuinely difficult operational challenges - the problems where few others can do the work well - across the sectors changing fastest:

  • Reduce airborne delay and improve flight routing to cut fuel burn·
  • Optimise public transport networks so more journeys shift to lower-emission modes
  • Reduce congestion - balancing economic cost, emissions, air quality and noise
  • Manage planned and unplanned disruption across rail and ground transport
  • Optimise networks and routes for freight and last-mile delivery, including dynamic pricing against sustainability targets
  • Enable leading levels of renewables on the grid through hyperlocal, fast-response prediction, pricing and dispatch
  • Plan and optimise networks for rising demand from electrification of transport and other sectors
  • Turn electric vehicles into a geographically transactional virtual power plant
  • Help asset-rich, energy-intensive operators extract latent value through intelligent, asset-aware demand response
  • Optimise complex, asset-heavy operations end to end - from extraction through logistics
  • Improve maintenance, repair and overhaul decisions to lift asset availability and reduce downtime
  • Adapt highly interdependent energy and transportsystems to a more volatile climate
  • Plan and respond to weather and environmental events, including resource distribution during emergencies such as bushfires
  • Measure environmental impacts - air quality, noise - to inform regulation and planning

Proof in operation

An Australian state transport and planning authority uses Optimal Reality to run one of the most advanced transport operations systems in the world - and one of the largest IoT programs in Australia. Its command centre receives up to 24 million updates per hour and real-time situational awareness from more than 20 live data sources.

If you operate a complex physical network and need a system your control room can rely on, we can show you what’s possible - quickly. Get in touch to scope a prototype.
