The State of AI in the Enterprise

Deloitte's 2026 AI report tracking adoption and impact

The untapped edge

Organisations today stand at the untapped edge of AI's potential. Our 2026 AI report reveals that success hinges on the ability to move boldly from ambition to activation.

An Australian Perspective

The “State of AI in the Enterprise” has been running for seven years and builds on Deloitte’s previous “State of Generative AI in the Enterprise” quarterly reports, intended to track the fast-moving adoption of GenAI in the enterprise. This edition of the survey, conducted between August and September 2025, connected with 3,235 business and IT leaders across 24 countries and six industries.

A comparison of Australian respondent data against the global average makes one thing clear: Australian organisations are investing in AI, but the gap with global peers is growing when it comes to realising transformation at scale. While adoption is increasing, the real challenge is shifting from pilots to production and unlocking the full value of AI across the business.

Only 65% of Australian respondents intend to raise AI investment next year, compared to 84% globally. Just 12% of Australian leaders report that generative AI is already transforming their business or industry, while the global figure is 25%. The message is straightforward: Australian AI ambitions are strong, but it is time to turn intent into action.

Australian organisations are running plenty of AI pilots, but too many remain in experimentation mode. While 28% of Australian respondents have moved at least 40% of their AI pilots into production, most have yet to see a broad, enterprise-wide impact. Encouragingly, over half expect to reach this milestone within the next six months, indicating a surge in adoption if strategic choices are made. Leaders now need to move from isolated use cases to enterprise transformation by making bold decisions to scale AI across products, services, and operations.

On value, the results are mixed. AI is delivering meaningful productivity gains, with 61% of Australian companies reporting improved efficiency. However, only 30% are using AI to deeply transform their ways of working, compared to 34% globally. For most organisations, AI is still about automating existing processes rather than fundamentally reimagining the business. The next step is clear: leaders who want to secure lasting competitive advantage must move beyond incremental improvements and rethink how work is done in a world of digital labour.

Agentic AI is quickly becoming a differentiator. About 69% of Australian organisations are using autonomous AI agents, which shifts AI from simply providing insights to actually taking action. This evolution introduces new risks: only 22% of Australian companies have advanced agent governance models, while talent shortages and cost barriers persist. Those seeing the most success are building governance capability now, starting with lower-risk use cases and scaling with clear accountability and intervention points as autonomy grows.

Physical AI, such as robots and automated machinery, is also gaining momentum, with 57% of Australian organisations already deploying these technologies. Sovereign AI is increasingly important, as 72% of companies now consider country of origin in vendor decisions and over 80% see it as a priority in strategic planning. This attention to resilience and readiness is driving the next wave of industrial automation, with adoption of physical AI expected to exceed 80% in Australia and globally within two years.

The Australian data sends a sharp message: Australia is making progress but needs to accelerate strategic, enterprise-level decisions to keep up with global peers. Real transformation will happen through reimagining business models, investing in governance, and adopting AI at scale, rather than just seeking productivity gains. Now is the time for Australian leaders to progress from pilot to production, embed trustworthy AI, and unlock the untapped potential.

The opportunity to catch up is real, but action must be decisive.
