How government can explore innovative solutions to fund NHI

By Wesley Solomon

Addressing the funding challenges associated with the National Health Insurance (NHI) act will require an innovative approach. As the country
prepares for the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement, we recognise the complexities surrounding funding mechanisms, including potential increases in personal income taxes. While there are concerns about the impact of tax hikes on already overburdened taxpayers, we see this as an opportunity for innovative solutions that go beyond tax increases alone.

We believe that balancing fiscal responsibility with economic growth is key. The successful implementation of digitisation efforts by South African Revenue Services, broadening the tax base, and fostering collaboration between stakeholders can help create a more sustainable approach to funding the NHI. By focusing on long-term reforms, including economic measures that encourage investment and growth, we are optimistic that South Africa can meet its healthcare goals without placing undue strain on taxpayers.

As we look forward to the upcoming ministerial budget speech, we remain committed to supporting a balanced approach that prioritizes both fiscal consolidation and the wellbeing of all South Africans.
