Deloitte Restructuring Survey 2023

Our 2023 restructuring report has recorded the highest participation in the history of our survey and an increase of 35% compared to the response rate in 2022. We continue to broaden both the regional perspectives in the survey, as well as incorporating the voice of our clients – the C-suite. This survey highlights the requirement for collective responsibility in the early identification of signs of financial distress and sounds a call to action for all stakeholders for early collaboration.

Practitioners reveal the secret to restructuring success

The mix of restructuring professionals and the C-suite are critical to understanding the key challenges faced by the restructuring industry.

Key findings include:

  • 81% of survey respondents (including the usually more optimistic C-suite) are pessimistic about growth in South Africa
  • 85% of survey respondents are anticipating an increase in business rescue activity
  • 71% of lenders believe that Part A is the primary purpose of business rescue, whilst only 3% of business rescues have been successful when using Part A as a measuring yard, begging the question of whether business rescue is suffering an identity crisis?
  • The most favoured restructuring tool is an advisor-led Restructuring Office

Deloitte provides restructuring, turnaround and implementation advice and services to underperforming and financially distressed businesses, their stakeholders, and advisors.
