Cape Town, South Africa – September 2022: Representing exemplar green building design, Deloitte Africa’s offices in Cape Town, The Ridge, received the highest honour by the World Architecture News Awards (WAN) this month – receiving ‘Best Overall Sustainable Architecture Project, Gold 2022’ award.
The Ridge is also recognised as being one of only nine buildings in South Africa to be awarded with a 6-star Green Star Office Design rating by the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA), exceeding South African excellence (5 star) and industry best practice (4 star). One of the greenest buildings in Africa, its designers call it a “living, breathing building-organism”.
“Imaginative approaches to sustainability really set this building apart,” noted the WAN judge, Jacqueline Beckingham.
The offices, currently home to Deloitte, feature a distinctive pleated design which corrects the solar orientation of the building to maximise light and minimise heat load. Roof vents within the glazed sculptural skylights fill the central atrium with light and fresh air, creating an internal street where people can circulate, meet, and interact.
An energy efficient mixed mode climate control system using innovative displacement ventilation and natural ventilation stabilises the building’s temperature.
Design highlights include exposed concrete, timber panels on interior walls and a wealth of indoor planting create a striking interior. The double volume entrance plaza with innovative saw-tooth timber ceiling leads into the Deloitte reception, client-facing meeting rooms, a staff restaurant and a café while a central sculptural staircase and lifts allow employees to easily connect with each other between floors.
The building's success relies on a behavioural change from the corporate user – for example the opening and closing of windows. This relationship between the inhabitant and the outside has a direct impact on the energy/carbon consumption, fresh air, the clothes you wear to work, one's connection to the outside environment, & ultimately happiness levels.
Completed 2020.
