Before joining Deloitte, I was a legal advisor at the Customs and Excise section of the South African Revenue Service. I have 19 years’ experience in customs consulting. During this period I consulted with a number of multinational clients and provided advice on a variety of customs and excise matters including customs valuation, product classification, general compliance and representing clients in disputes with SARS
I am an Associate Director with Deloitte Tax and the current National Lead for Excise, a specialist division who provides professional services to governments and private sector clients of the firm concerning Trade Remedies and Customs Consulting.
During the last 12 years Riaan specialized in the fuel and spirits industries and provided clients with assistance and advice on the implementation of duty at source (DAS), other regulatory compliance matters, internal procedures and disputes with SARS.
More recently, Riaan assisted various multi-national clients with the implementation of the Health Promotion Levy “Sugar Tax”.
Riaan assisted various specific clients as well as industry bodies with proposals to both SARS and National Treasury on proposed amendments to legislation.
