Carmen Whateley serves as a Partner in the Financial Services practice at Deloitte Africa. She brings 30 years of experience across banking, payments, telecommunications, and digital transformation, supporting organisations both as an executive and as an advisor.

She has co‑led early internet banking initiatives, contributed to the launch of South Africa’s first digital‑only challenger bank, and played a key role in expanding digital payments nationwide. Her leadership includes developing the digital payments strategy and digital business portfolio at a leading South African bank, serving as the executive responsible for introducing the country’s first mobile money service within a major telecommunications provider, and pioneering merchant‑funded discount ecosystems in the South African market.

As a Consulting Executive, she has partnered with Financial Services clients on core banking modernisation, digital transformation, new payment rail adoption, and data‑driven change.

She is recognised for her strategic agility, people leadership, and her ability to turn complexity into clear, executable outcomes.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Industrial Psychology and Industrial Sociology, a Programme in Development Management from Wits Business School, and a master’s degree in Business Executive Coaching. She is also a certified Gallup Strengths‑based coach.
