Sports Ecosystem and Industry in Türkiye

The report by Deloitte Türkiye, in collaboration with the Turkish National Olympic Committee (TMOK), provides a holistic view of the economic, social and institutional structure of Türkiye’s sports ecosystem. It estimates the ecosystem’s total annual spending volume at approximately TRY 181 billion and explores the different areas through which sport creates value and presents opportunities for further development.

A data-driven perspective into economic and social impact of sports

Today, sport constitutes a multi-layered ecosystem that extends beyond on-field competition to influence many areas, including investment, broadcasting, sponsorship, tourism, technology, employment, and social participation. The study examines a broad range of components, including professional and amateur sports, national institutions and teams, school and university sports, para sports and the Paralympic sports ecosystem, sports tourism, esports and ancillary services. The study aims to support a more transparent, measurable and comparable assessment of Türkiye’s sports economy, by analyzing available current data.

Key findings from the study

  • Estimated annual spending across professional and amateur sports, national institutions and teams, school and university sports, Paralympic sports and esports amounts to approximately TRY 81 billion.
  • Taken into account, TRY 100 billion in sports investment by central and local administrations, the ecosystem's estimated total annual spending volume reaches to approximately TRY 181 billion. Football accounts for an estimated 75% of the professional club and athlete economy, which has an estimated value of approximately TRY 52 billion.
  • Size of the basketball is estimated at approximately TRY 7.3 billion, while the professional volleyball economy is estimated at approximately TRY 4.6 billion. Women’s leagues account for approximately 60% of the professional volleyball economy.
  • Türkiye’s amateur sports ecosystem is estimated at approximately TRY 10 billion, while around 1.3 million students participated in school sports during the 2024–2025 academic year.
  • Türkiye’s sports tourism market is estimated at between TRY 45 billion and TRY 55 billion, with international visitors estimated to generate approximately 50–60% of the revenues.
  • Türkiye’s historic total of 28 medals at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games is a strong indicator of the institutional and sports progress achieved in para sports.

A holistic view of Türkiye’s sports ecosystem

Beyond the current economic landscape, the study examines the economic and social value generated by women’s sport, the broad participation base supported by amateur and school sports, the importance of para sports in inclusion, and emerging opportunities in areas such as sports tourism.
