The Multiannual Work Programme for LIFE 2021-2024 and the calls for project proposal for 2021 have been published. LIFE is a European Union funding programme that supports innovative close-to-market projects. The programme is open to both large companies and SMEs, as well as, governments and NGOs.

Funding intensity

This programme includes: (i) a co-financing rate between 60% to 95% maximum; and (ii) supports projects typically ranging in size from €1 million to €10 million.

Funding scheme-topics

LIFE 2021-2024 has expanded into four new sub-programmes (with their approximate budgets indicated for this period):

  1. Nature and Biodiversity (€1.103.5 billion): This sub-programme supports projects that contribute to the development, implementation and monitoring of innovative techniques and methods to promote best practices in relation to nature and biodiversity, particularly those that help to achieve the objectives of the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030. In addition, support is given to ‘Strategic Nature Projects’, which are designed to assist and boost the implementation of EU nature and biodiversity policies in areas such as agriculture and rural development.
  2. Circular Economy and Quality of Life (€697.5 million ): This sub-programme aims to support the transition to a sustainable, circular, energy-efficient and climate-resilient economy, a toxic-free environment, and to protect, restore and improve the quality of the environment.
  3. Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation (€505.5 million): This sub-programme focuses on actions that support the possibility of achieving a climate-neutral and resilient society, implementing the 2030 energy and climate policy framework and meeting the EU's commitments under the Paris Agreement on climate change.
  4. Clean Energy Transition (€527 million): This new sub-programme will aim to facilitate the transition toward an energy-efficient, renewable energy-based, climate-neutral and resilient economy. Projects funded under this sub-programme will support the delivery of EU policies such as the European Green Deal.
