Malta, 20 October 2023 - Deloitte Malta took a leading role in promoting environmental sustainability during the Freshers’ Week in Malta. In collaboration with Nature Trust Malta, and through the Deloitte Foundation, students were inspired to promote environmental sustainability and learned about pressing issues related to climate change and the environment.
During KSU Freshers' Week 2023 at the University of Malta, students were encouraged to visit the Deloitte stand to learn about career paths being offered through the Deloitte Programmes, and to learn about sea turtles in Malta that are endangered or threatened. Students heard about WorldClimate – Deloitte’s strategy to drive responsible climate choices – and were invited to raise awareness by taking a photo on the stand, using props that conveyed messaging about climate change, sharing on social media, and tagging @DeloitteMalta. Deloitte pledged to adopt a turtle for every photo shared towards a goal of adopting 100 turtles, which was successfully reached by the third day on campus. This accomplishment reflects the power of collective action towards environmental conservation and sustainability.
Just a few days earlier, an engaging educational outing was organised in Gozo, for interns following the Deloitte Student Programme, and featured an informative session by Nature Trust Malta on plastic waste and its impact on the environment. The day included a hands-on plastic clean-up activity at Ramla Ħamra Bay, allowing students to sieve sand to identify plastic fragments. Additionally, they had the opportunity to explore plastic waste through a digital microscope, gaining further insights on microplastics - tiny pieces of plastic material which are found in growing quantities in the ocean. According to the UN, there are as many as 51 trillion microplastic particles in the sea and can be ingested by marine animals. Besides being detrimental to marine life, these plastics can end up in humans through the food chain.
Caroline Cassar Reynaud, People and Purpose Leader at Deloitte in Malta, emphasised the importance of this initiative, stating, “At Deloitte, we recognise the importance of addressing climate change and environmental sustainability and we strongly believe in the importance of nurturing this transformation within the forthcoming generation of adults.”
Deloitte Malta provides students with the opportunity to obtain experience whilst they are studying through its various programmes namely the ACCA Programme, the Graduate Programme, the 6th Form Programme as well as the MCAST Programme.
