Impact and legacy-driven Financial Leadership Honored at 9th Uganda CFO Awards as PostBank’s Ssenyange Takes Top Prize

Kampala, Uganda – October 17, 2025: The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Uganda and Deloitte Uganda last evening hosted the 9th Edition of the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Awards at the Kampala Serena Hotel, celebrating excellence and innovation in financial leadership under the theme “CFO Vision: Creating Impact and Legacy.”

Charlotte Kukunda, Country Manager- ACCA Uganda, while opening the gala, highlighted that this year’s edition attracted a record 546 nominations from 63 CFOs over a 50-day timeline, reflecting a 30% growth from last year’s submissions

“Out of the 63 CFOs that were nominated, only 20 were repeat nominees. The rest were first-time attempts, while 21 of these were disqualified, meaning they did not pay attention to the guidelines.” Kukunda urged future participants to follow the nomination guidelines and highlighted the high traffic recorded for the first time from government officials. This was represented by nominations from local government accountants in Budaka, Kakumiro, Lira, Nebbi, Nakapiripit, and Kitgum under the public sector award category.

Kukunda encouraged other sector players to participate in the awards, noting that, “We still acknowledge that the banking and financial services and insurance continue to dominate the non-sector specific categories. 13 out of the 63 were from the banking sector and 6 out of these were shortlisted among the finalists.”

Paul Ssali, Managing Partner - Deloitte Uganda, while speaking about the 9th edition awards theme, invited CFOs to reflect on what they leave behind as individuals and organizations. “Legacy speaks to the values that we uphold, the people that we mentor, and the communities that we uplift during our work. As we celebrate the achievements of the nominees, let us also look forward and reflect on how our influence will drive impact that lasts and the legacy that we leave.”

This year’s awards recognized finance and accounting professionals across 9 categories: Young CFO, SME, Public Sector, Compliance & Governance, Finance Transformation & Technology, Strategy Execution, Sustainability, Leadership, Not-for-Profit and the 10th award reserved for the most coveted CFO of the Year Award.

Delivering the Keynote Address, Patrick Ayota, Managing Director of the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), urged finance leaders to look beyond ordinary number crunching and focus more on creating legacies that drive long-term impact and value.

“A CFO sits in a position of privilege. No other office in an organization sits at the pinnacle of the convergence of information. Every decision that is made in an organization, whether it comes from HR or marketing, will find convergence in finance. So, you’re sitting on top of this information and data. Like the good book says, to whom much is given, much is required. There’s going to be an accountability that God will require you to have more impact than an HR or marketing person.”

He urged CFOs to think differently by asking themselves where and how they’re adding value in the organization and encouraged them to get out of their comfort zones, meet customers, and cross department teams to be able to contribute to the overall organization’s performance.

Speaking as Chief Guest, James Bantu, Assistant Auditor General at the Office of the Auditor General, commended ACCA and Deloitte for their continued efforts in empowering the finance profession and promoting ethical leadership and encouraged them to take pride and continue to play the leading role in Uganda’s 10-fold economic growth agenda, highlighting their responsibility to ensure fiscal discipline, transparency, and innovation across both public and private sectors.

“CFOs are expected to unlock tenfold growth of Uganda’s economy, from the $50 million GDP to somewhere around 500, and of course, your role as CFOs in making that reality is going to be critical. Let us continue to create environments where CFOs can thrive with autonomy, with accountability and access tools and data they need to drive transformation.”
