Ireland (04 March 2022) – Department of Justice/Immigration Service Delivery announce change to Irish Residence Permit (IRP) Cards

What is the change?

It has been announced, that from 01 March 2022, a new version of the Irish Residence Permit (IRP) Card will begin to be issued to all non-EEA nationals registered to live/work/study in Ireland.

Implementation time frame:

  • The change is to take effect from 01 March 2022.
    Who is affected:
  • Individuals submitting IRP renewal applications or attending first time IRP registration appointments from the 01 March 2022 onwards.

Key points:

  • The new IRP Card will be compliant with the updated EU common format specifications, including additional security features for validation. The IRP will also now include a signature of the cardholder.
  • In date versions of the old design will remain valid until the stated expiry date printed on the card, or 31 May 2022, in line with the ministerial extension of immigration permissions provided during the COVID-19 pandemic, depending on whichever is later.

Deloitte welcomes the change to the Irish Residence Permit (IRP) Card as it has been updated in line with the EU common format specifications.

Brexit will come fully into effect on 31 December 2020, when the UK leaves the EU after the end of the transition period. The Department of Justice have announced that nothing will change for UK nationals living in Ireland; they may continue to reside, work and travel in Ireland. Similarly, family members and dependants of UK Nationals who are living in Ireland with valid ‘Stamp 4 EU Fam’ permission, will retain their same residency rights. However, they will be required to exchange their current ‘Stamp 4 EU Fam’ Irish Residence Permit (IRP) Card for a new one that will state their residence rights derive from EU Free Movement under the Withdrawal Agreement.
