ISD urges customers intending to travel over the coming Christmas period to submit renewal applications prior to 31 October 2023

25 October 2023

What is the change?

Immigration Service Delivery (ISD) has recommended that any Irish Residence Permit (IRP) holder whose permission expires over the Christmas period to submit a renewal application before 31 October 2023 if they have international travel planned during this period.

Key points:

Implementation time frame: from 9 October 2023.

Who is affected: IRP card holders whose permission expires during the Christmas period.

Next Steps

  • All IRP card holders with planned international travel over the Christmas period and an IRP expiry date between November 2023 and January 2024 should submit an application to renew their current permission before 31 October to ensure that they are able to travel with their renewed card.
  • Processing times for IRP renewals for Dublin based applicants are currently at least 3-4 weeks, with a further 2 weeks to receive the physical card in the post.
  • Waiting times for appointments in the rest of Ireland can take even longer so an application for a renewal application should be made at the earliest possible convenience if the above situation is applicable.
  • ISD cannot guarantee that any application submitted after 31 October 2023 will be processed in time to facilitate all travel.

Analysis & Comments:

Deloitte recommends all IRP card holders who will need to renew their card to travel over the Christmas period do so as soon as possible.

The issuance of the recommendation from ISD is reflective of the expected high volumes of renewal applications.

If travel over the Christmas period is unavoidable, Deloitte would urge all IRP card holders to return to the country before the expiry date on their IRP card.
