Diversity & Inclusion with Tanya Suryawanshi

Introduction:

I am a data scientist within Deloitte Ireland's Artificial Intelligence & Data team. I joined Deloitte in September 2022 as a graduate. I am committed to promoting gender balance in the tech industry. As a Director for Women Who Code Ireland, I work to empower women in STEM fields, providing opportunities and resources for their growth and success. Through my involvement in programs and societies like iWish and Women in Tech, I actively support equality and challenge stereotypes. With a focus on fostering an inclusive and diverse tech community, I strive to inspire aspiring young females and break down barriers in the industry.

How do you identify yourself?

I identify myself as an individual who is determined to break barriers and make a positive impact in the field. I am driven by a strong belief in equal opportunities for all, regardless of gender, and I strive to contribute towards creating a more inclusive and balanced STEM community.

What does inclusion mean to you?

To me, inclusion means creating an environment where all individuals, regardless of their background, identity, or abilities, feel welcomed, respected, and valued. It involves recognizing and embracing diversity and providing equal opportunities for everyone to contribute and thrive.

How is Deloitte helping you build your career?

Deloitte has provided me with various resources and opportunities for career development, including training programs, mentorship initiatives, and exposure to diverse projects and clients. The firm's supportive and inclusive culture fosters growth and has provided me with a platform to enhance skills, expand networks, and advance in the field of data science.

To me, inclusion means creating an environment where all individuals, regardless of their background, identity, or abilities, feel welcomed, respected, and valued.

What challenges did you experience, if any, in your career and how did you overcome them?

Throughout my career, I may have faced challenges such as imposter syndrome, limited representation, or bias. To overcome them, I have focused on building confidence in my abilities, seeking support from mentors and networks, and continuously learning and growing in my field. Additionally, being proactive in seeking out opportunities and creating my own path has helped me navigate challenges effectively.

What could others learn from your journey?

Others can learn the importance of perseverance, continuous learning, and seeking opportunities for personal and professional growth. It's crucial to remain passionate, set goals, and actively pursue them. Building a strong support network, seeking mentorship, and actively participating in relevant communities or organizations can also provide valuable guidance and opportunities.

Do you have any mentors, and if so, what is their value to you?

Having mentors is incredibly valuable. Mentors provide guidance, support, and insights based on their own experiences. Throughout education and career my mentors have offered valuable advice, helped me navigate challenges, and provided opportunities for growth and development. Mentors can serve as role models and provide valuable feedback, helping to shape and enhance one's career trajectory.

What is the most valuable thing you have learned since you joined Deloitte?

Since joining Deloitte, one of the most valuable things I have learned is the importance of collaboration and teamwork. Working on diverse projects with professionals from different backgrounds and expertise has taught me the significance of effective communication, shared knowledge, and leveraging collective strengths to achieve common goals.

What's one piece of advice you would give to a young female starting off their career?

One piece of advice I would give to a young female starting off in career is to believe in yourself and your abilities. Have confidence in your skills, voice your ideas and opinions, and never shy away from pursuing opportunities. Surround yourself with supportive networks, seek out mentors, and don't be afraid to ask for help when needed.

What do you see is the role of an ally/ what do you value most?

The role of an ally is to support and advocate for individuals or groups who may face systemic barriers or discrimination. Allies actively work to promote inclusivity, equality, and fairness by using their privilege and influence to amplify marginalized voices and drive positive change. What I value most in an ally is their commitment to ongoing learning and growth. Allies who are open-minded, receptive to feedback, and willing to challenge their own biases are more effective in creating meaningful change. Genuine empathy, active listening, and taking action to address systemic inequities are also crucial qualities I value in an ally.
