CEF Transport Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility call for proposals published

On 29 February 2024, the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency through its Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) funding programme published a new call for proposals under the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF). The aim is to support the deployment of alternative fuels supply infrastructure, contributing to the decarbonisation of transport across the Trans-European Transport Network.

This phase of the AFIF (2024-25) will focus on the objectives set out in Regulation (EU) 2023/1804 governing the deployment of alternative fuels infrastructure (AFIR), Regulation (EU) 2023/2405 on ensuring a level playing field for sustainable air transport (ReFuelEU Aviation), and Regulation (EU) 2023/1805 on the use of renewable and low-carbon fuels in maritime transport (FuelEU Maritime).

Eligible projects

This call for proposals supports:

  • High-power electricity recharging stations;
  • Hydrogen refuelling stations;
  • Megawatt recharging stations for heavy duty vehicles;
  • Electricity and hydrogen supply at airports; and
  • Electricity supply, and ammonia and methanol bunkering facilities in ports.

AFIF supports mature investment projects.

Total budget

The total budget for this call amounts to EUR 1 billion. The budget is divided into two categories: EUR 780 million is allocated to the “General envelope,” and EUR 220 million to the “Cohesion envelope.”

How to apply

The AFIF call for proposals has three cut-off dates for submissions in 2024-25. Applicants can submit their proposals before any of the three cut-off dates:

  • 24 September 2024 at 17.00 (CET);
  • 11 June 2025 at 17.00 (CET); or
  • 17 December 2025 at 17.00 (CET).
