Trust in generative AI

A Belgian perspective

In Belgium, generative AI awareness is high. However, one in three has yet to use the technology. Interestingly, AI adoption is highest in Brussels and among men. These are just some of the thought-provoking findings of the study conducted by IPSOS for Deloitte. To close the gaps, companies must overcome significant challenges to ensure that people feel comfortable with Gen AI.

Bridging the gaps

Deloitte’s recent survey involving over 30,000 participants across Europe, including 2,714 Belgian respondents aged 16-75, highlights the growing importance of trust in AI systems.

AI adoption is strongly influenced by trust, with women showing lower trust levels than men across a range of use cases. Closing the gap between organisations, consumers, and the employees who rely on AI tools is crucial for the future of generative AI.

The regional divide

The use of AI in Belgium is growing in both personal and professional settings. Two out of five Belgians (40%) report that their company is encouraging the use of generative AI. However, the regional split is 47% in Brussels, 42% in Wallonia, and 36% in Flanders.

Brussels also stands out when it comes to Gen AI trust: adoption is highest in the region, while trust in the accuracy of AI is at its lowest. Less than half of respondents in Brussels (44%) believe AI delivers accurate results compared to one in two in Wallonia (49%) and Flanders (51%).

Almost one in three users (30%) rely on AI tools weekly for work-related tasks. One in four who use AI tools for personal purposes (25%) employ them on a weekly basis.

A paradox of optimism and concern

Remarkably, both senior and middle management use generative AI more often than non-management employees. Two-thirds of senior management (64%) use it at least weekly, compared to half of middle management (51%) and only two in five (38%) non-management employees.

The use of generative AI provides many advantages in the workplace. Yet, job security concerns persist. Employees across different sectors fear that AI will replace their jobs, with men being significantly more worried than women. However, there is also optimism as over three-quarters of generative AI users believe that it will make their work easier and more enjoyable.

In this study, we assess the levels of trust in Gen AI and readiness to use Gen AI tools and applications, from the perspective of consumers, employees, and executives.
