Safe and responsible use of AI in Australia

A proportionate, harmonised approach to regulation of AI is required to strike a balance between enabling innovation and protecting society. In June 2023, Deloitte welcomed the opportunity to submit a response to the Department of Industry, Science and Resources (DISR)’s as part of its consultation process around how Australia should regulate AI.

Our paper focuses on two foundational issues – what regulatory framework should be applied to AI and what AI systems fall within this regulatory framework. We believe that the answers to these questions will provide the 'north star' by which Australia should govern AI to harness its enormous potential, while protecting its citizens, values and unique environment. This paper was submitted in July 2023.
