A collaboration between Watermark Search International, AICD, and Deloitte Australia
As Australian organisations navigate an increasingly complex and competitive environment, it is becoming increasingly evident that ‘Boards of the future’ will require greater diversity of skills, lived experiences and fresh perspectives to uplift productivity and unlock new sources of growth and opportunity.
Now in its 11th edition, the 2025 Watermark Search International Board Diversity Index developed in collaboration with the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) and Deloitte Australia, remains the only comprehensive analysis of the composition of Australian boards measuring diversity and inclusion beyond the conventional dimension of gender. It covers several other important areas such as First Nations, Disability, LGBTQ+ and cultural background, and therefore is a key benchmark for leaders seeking to understand and enhance board diversity.
The data tells a clear story - while gender representation is progressing, broader diversity gaps remain. This isn’t about ticking boxes; it’s about unlocking the value of different perspectives. Diverse lived experiences enable boards to challenge assumptions, anticipate change, and lead with agility. In today’s environment, that’s not just beneficial—it’s vital.
The boards that embrace this will be better positioned to drive growth and deliver stronger outcomes for the organisations and stakeholders that they serve.

Forward-thinking organisations are broadening the lens on board-ready talent; investing in diverse pipelines, sponsoring emerging directors, expanding search partnerships beyond traditional networks, and valuing adjacent experience that brings fresh insight to the table. As businesses look to strengthen performance and sharpen their competitive edge, the opportunity is clear. Inclusive leadership is not just good practice, it’s good business.
