Now in its 12th year, the Board Diversity Index provides a comprehensive analysis of diversity across the ASX 300, examining gender, cultural background, age, tenure, independence, First Nations, LGBTQ+ and skills at the board level.
As markets globalise, customer demographics evolve, and geopolitical risk intensifies, boards are being challenged to move beyond representation and consider a more fundamental question: Is our composition aligned to our future, or anchored to our past?
Board composition does not shift dramatically in a single year - Nor should it. However, a boards ability to anticipate the future and seek out more diverse perspectives and skills to better navigate that future will be increasingly critical.
From the AICD’s perspective, diversity is fundamentally about board effectiveness. A mix of skills, experiences and perspectives supports better decision making and stronger governance - particularly in an environment of rising complexity.
That should prompt boards to reflect on whether their current approaches are sufficiently broad for the operating environment ahead. - Mark Rigotti, AICD Managing Director and CEO.
This year’s findings show that while gender diversity continues to progress incrementally, advances in cultural and broader dimensions remain measured.
While diversity metrics provide important transparency, they do not alone determine governance effectiveness. The more pressing challenge is whether diverse perspectives are actively integrated into decision-making, shaping strategy, strengthening oversight, and enabling better outcomes.
This year’s report explores what it means to move from representation to organisational readiness—where diversity is not only present but operationalised. It highlights emerging trends, ongoing challenges, and future opportunities, prompting boards to reflect on whose voices may be missing and what risks or opportunities may remain unseen as a result.
Diversity is a governance imperative. Complex global markets, shifting demographics, and rapid disruption demand more than conventional credentials - they require diverse perspectives and lived experiences at the table. The boards that get this right will be better positioned navigate disruption and lead into the future. - Tharani Jegatheeswaran, Partner, National Client Relationships Leader and Boardroom Program Leader, Deloitte Australia
