Adopting cloud technology in government

Navigating finance and budget considerations

Cloud technology continues to demonstrate the value and potential of new and evolving technologies, driving fundamental change across government. However, barriers to delivering the value represented by public cloud remain, including finance and accounting challenges. Are these genuine blockers, or myth?

The adoption of large-scale public cloud has many well understood benefits for organisations and their customers. Recently, use of cloud-based solutions has been critical as an enabler for implementing new, scaled, citizen centered digital channels – especially in the context of our drought, bushfire and COVID-19 responses. Public sector leaders in Australia increasingly recognise these benefits and are often approaching complex information technology (IT) related procurement issues with a cloud-first mindset.

Barriers to adopting public cloud solutions do remain, including finance and accounting considerations. We have produced two insightful reports to explore and challenge these specific issues, and to provide practical guidance to government organisations:

  • Navigating finance and budget considerations – A survey of public sector leaders across government in Australia
  • Practical accounting and budget considerations for IT and Finance teams.
