Humans of Human Capital

Hear from Lia on her career journey with us

“It’s the people at Deloitte that make it the most rewarding place to work. In the last 18 months, I’ve gained lifelong friends and have connected with so many intelligent and passionate individuals both on a personal and professional level.”

Share a bit about yourself, your role at Deloitte and the work you do?

I’m originally from London, U.K but have lived in beautiful Melbourne for just over five years now. I joined our amazing Human Capital team last March – which makes me a proud member of the ‘COVID-19 virtual cohort of 2020’!

I have worked across workforce management and payroll advisory projects, and human-centred technology transformations to help our clients to realise sustainable change outcomes. I’m currently working on an internal change project (meaning my client IS Deloitte!) which has been an incredible experience providing me insight into the nuts and bolts of how our business operates. Not only have I been able to play a focal part in leading initiatives that will enhance our own employee experience in Consulting, but I’ve also been able to personally see the impacts and benefits of our team’s work in action.

Did you have any preconceptions about Deloitte that have been confirmed?

From speaking to my friends who work at Deloitte (both in the UK and in Australia), I’ve always understood Deloitte to be an organisation that prioritises its core company value of ‘taking care of each other’. Having spent most of my career at Deloitte working in my active wear from my living room, I can vouch for this. Our Human Capital leadership team has gone above and beyond to ensure that each of us have felt supported and safe during the many months of lockdown endured by our Melbourne team. Senior leaders have taken the time to check in with us through personal phone calls, have organised the delivery of care packages (filled with the most decadent cookies I’ve ever eaten) and have encouraged our ‘HC Postcode Hubs’ initiative which grouped together pairs or teams of people living within the same neighbourhood to connect face to face whilst working from home.

What makes Deloitte a rewarding and inspiring place to work?

For me, two things in particular stand out that make Deloitte a rewarding place to work. Firstly, the multitude of opportunities to make the most of flexible work. The onset of COVID-19 has transformed our perception of ‘work’ and advanced our new ways of working. Using ‘DeloitteFlex´ has allowed to me tailor my working style to my unique schedule and preferences. For instance, I used ‘PlaceFlex´ to extend my holiday in Sydney, so that I could work from my Airbnb by day and eat ice cream on Manly beach by night! And now that international borders have opened, I’m looking to take an extended trip back home to London, where I’m planning to use a combination of Deloitte’s ‘PlaceFlex’ and the Career Break option to spend my summer months visiting loved ones.

Secondly, it’s the people at Deloitte that make it the most rewarding place to work. In the last 18 months, I’ve gained lifelong friends and have connected with so many intelligent and passionate individuals both on a personal and professional level. Last year I worked on a nine-month engagement with a team full of Brisbanians and Sydney siders (many virtual scavenger hunts, trivia nights and coffee catchups were had), and when we did eventually meet one another face to face in sunny Port Macquarie, the only difference in our interactions was the shock over how tall or short we all were!

Despite being part of the ‘COVID-19 virtual cohort’, I feel blessed to have met so many amazing people in Human Capital – experiencing the pandemic together as One HC team has brought us closer and more connected than ever. I really appreciate working for an organisation that really takes care of and looks out for me and our team.
