Meet Shefali - Director, Consulting

Meet Shefali Sehgal, a Director in our Canberra health team. Shefali specialises in designing strategy and delivering large-scale technology enabled healthcare programs.

How did your passion for healthcare start and what was the motivation for pursuing a career in healthcare?

I pivoted from a highly technical field (neurosurgery) to engineering early in my career! Despite that change, I always gravitated towards healthcare and medicine because it is an evolving industry - leaders constantly need to make decisions with imperfect information, and at the same time lives are on the line.

Could you provide a brief overview of your professional journey leading up to your current role?

My professional journey has been an exciting and diverse one, marked by a pursuit of growth and a dedication to making a meaningful impact. Since 2012, my journey took me across the globe, from the bustling business environment of Germany to the breathtaking landscapes of New Zealand, where I had the privilege of working and gaining international exposure through consulting.

Upon settling in Australia, I had executive roles within the public service, where I had the opportunity to lead and influence initiatives that had a far-reaching impact on society. In my pursuit of excellence and a broader platform for impact, I joined Deloitte, a global consulting powerhouse. This move allowed me to blend my public service commitment with the agility and innovation of the private sector.

What skills and capability do you bring to transform health?

I bring commercial awareness in the public sector. I shape strategy and deliver large-scale technology enabled healthcare programs.

What can you tell us about your role at Deloitte and the work you're involved in?

At Deloitte, I have the privilege of leading advisory and transformation projects in the dynamic and ever-evolving field of healthcare, with a particular focus on federal health. Deloitte's commitment to innovation and its relentless pursuit of providing cutting-edge solutions align perfectly with my vision for driving positive change. We are at the forefront of innovative strategies and approaches, from operational excellence to portfolio management offices, from strategic planning to driving growth and ensuring sustainability.

What impact are you looking to have on the sector and what is your vision for the future of healthcare?

My impact and vision for the future of healthcare are driven by the belief that, with dedication, innovation, and a shared commitment to excellence, we can transform healthcare into a force for good.

I envision a healthcare sector that is not just focused on treating illness but on preventing it through proactive and holistic approaches to health and wellness. This vision extends to a system that is sustainable, both ecologically and economically, ensuring that healthcare resources are optimised and waste is minimised.

Having lived in seven different countries in my life, I consider myself a true global citizen. I've witnessed firsthand how diverse perspectives can lead to innovative solutions and more empathetic care. It's a reminder that, in healthcare, understanding and embracing cultural diversity is not just a choice but a necessity.
