Deloitte Names USC Team Winners of First MBA Technology Innovation Challenge

Students recommend Target drive growth through gamification, virtual stores and same-day delivery

New York, January 30, 2014 — A team of four students from the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business (USC) has been named winners of the inaugural MBA Technology Innovation Challenge virtual case study competition, sponsored by Deloitte and Target.

MBA students from business schools across the country were invited to participate in the challenge and create innovative solutions to help Target fuel growth in today’s evolving retail marketplace. The students were asked how they would help transform Target’s business model and were given two weeks to develop strategies and pitch their ideas via 3–5 minute video submissions.

More than 140 teams made up of over 430 students competed. The USC team prevailed by recommending an innovative approach for Target to enhance their already strong guest relationships through gamification, personalization and loyalty rewards.

“We designed the competition to engage first-year MBA students and introduce them to Deloitte by asking them to tap their strengths — their business acumen and knowledge — to develop innovative solutions for a real client issue,” said Bill Briggs, director and chief technology officer, Deloitte Consulting LLP, who also serves as Technology practice recruiting leader. “Our clients look to us to provide leaders who inspire confidence and help them gain a competitive edge. Tackling complex business problems such as this gives students an understanding of how we serve clients and the challenging assignments they can expect to experience during their careers.”

Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business was awarded second place in the competition with their idea for interactive shopping experiences in high-traffic locations. Third place went to a separate team from USC who focused on offering same-day delivery. The video submissions were judged by representatives from Deloitte Consulting’s Technology practice and Target’s Enterprise Strategy group.

“Target congratulates the winners and thanks all the participants for their insights, creativity and hard work,” says Jamil Ghani, vice president of enterprise strategy for Target. “The virtual case study competition was a great way to get fresh thinking on some of Target’s most interesting business opportunities and engage with some of the country’s strongest future business leaders.”

The winning USC team will be given an automatic invitation to the final round of summer associate interviews with Deloitte Consulting’s Technology practice. MBA summer associates are selected after a rigorous process that includes two rounds of interviews with Deloitte personnel and a visit to their prospective office location.
