Over the past decade Procurement organizations evolved from serving as purchasing gatekeepers to becoming a true service provider to the business. Many Procurement leadership teams now focus as much energy on managing internal business relationships, external supplier challenges, implementing savings and forecasting risk as they historically have on pure strategic sourcing. And they are doing so while keeping a laundry list of rising expectations in mind, a list that keeps growing annually (e.g., managing commodity volatility more effectively, getting involved in reducing brand risk through the actions of global suppliers, etc.)
Deciding what should be strategically managed by Procurement, and where specific capabilities can be sought externally, has rarely been more important as this expanding charter has not come with unlimited resources.
