The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is situated in the Levant region, sharing a border to the north with Syria, to the northeast with Iraq, to the east and south with Saudi Arabia, as well as the Gulf of Aqaba to the southwest and the West Bank to the west. This gives the country a strategic location at the crossroads of the Middle East and North Africa region, as well as placing it centrally between Europe and Asia. As a result, Jordan is seen as a gateway to the Middle East. Based on its constitution (promulgated on January 1, 1952), Jordan is a constitutional monarchy with executive authority vested in the King and a Council of Ministers.
