The UK Government’s stated objective is that “we must significantly increase investment in, and support for, renewable energy.” The forthcoming Energy White Paper is expected to address in more detail the Government’s thinking on the optimal framework to deliver clean, secure and sufficient energy in the long-term. In the meantime, renewable energy businesses and investors have to make decisions on how the landscape will look in 2020 and beyond. The recent agreement on binding EU wide renewables targets, developments on nuclear and last year’s Energy Review are just some of the factors that have to be taken into account.

It is clear that there is no simple, single solution and a more balanced approach, driven by technological advances, increased efficiency and demand management, will be needed. However, as policy objectives and implementation are being refined, a number of questions for business are only being answered, slowly if at all.
