Tsinghua University captured the crown at the Deloitte Tax Championship 2012 ("the Tax Championship" or "the competition"), an annual tax competition for tertiary students in Greater China, with a record participation of 66 universities this year. Zhongnan University of Economics and Law and Sun Yat-sen University were in second and third place respectively. For the essay competition, four post-graduate students – Mr. Lin Hanyao (Sun Yat-sen University), Ms. Zhang Chujie (University of International Business and Economics) and Ms. Sun Tian and Mr. Su Guocan (joint essay from Xiamen University) were the top winners.

Following the first round of competitions in August, the 13 finalist teams competed against with one another at the final national competition at Suzhou from 19-21 October 2012. During the final competition, students were required to provide solutions to a simulated business case through a presentation to a panel of judges, including government's tax officials and senior business executives. For the essay competition, students from the eight selected merit papers were required to deliver a presentation for determining the top three winners.

"Over the years, the Tax Championship has become not just a competition, but an interactive platform for students, teachers and industry practitioners in encouraging tax education and supporting the curriculum development. China’s tax reform, coupled with increased cross border business activities, has boosted the demand for tax professionals. As the organizers, the Deloitte Tax Research Foundation and Shanghai Deloitte Tax Ltd. carry the mission to support talent development, which is pivotal for the long-term growth of the profession," said Ms. Vivian Jiang, Country Tax Leader, Deloitte China.

Deloitte is pleased to see how the Tax Championship has contributed to tax education in Greater China, especially in the context of helping students understand tax rules and their applications for business in the region."

Deloitte Tax Championship is a large-scale and high quality competition with fair and stringent standards. The competition is an interactive platform for the exchange of tax knowledge, topical regulatory issues and practical applications. The competition not only has helped strengthen our tax knowledge, but also allowed students and teachers to meet with their counterparts, government officials, business executives and tax professionals for academic exchange. During the competition, we came to understand the meaning of "knowledge integration and innovation."
