Deloitte Bermuda practice

The firm is lead by eight principals in Bermuda. Below is a short description of each principal's specialization and length of time at the firm.


John Johnston
John accepted the CBC CEO role effective June 1, 2012. As the CEO, John leads and manages the Executives and sets the strategic direction of the CBC. John has 25 years of auditing experience serving clients in the financial services industry, primarily insurance and reinsurance enterprises. He represents the CBC on the Americas Region Executive Committee, has previously been the Regulatory Readiness Principal for the Bermuda firm, and has served as the Professional Practice Director and the principal responsible for training in the Bermuda office. John began his career in Bermuda as an intern 25 years ago and truly exemplifies what hard work, technical expertise and commitment to exceptional client service should be. He was appointed to partner in 1998 and has been the office managing principal since 2009.

Mark Baumgartner
Mark has been with Deloitte Bermuda since 1998 becoming a partner in 2007. Mark leads the Alternative Investment Group and Secondment Services Group. He specializes in assurance services for the Alternative Investment Group, including SAS 70 reports, and has deep experience with alternative investment structures including hedge funds, feeder funds, fund of funds, side pockets and the financial instruments, including derivatives, in which they invest.

Anna Burns
Anna has been with Deloitte Bermuda since 2003 and became a partner in 2012.  She specializes in Assurance Services for reinsurers, particularly SEC registrants, as well as Alternative Investments Funds.



Muhammad Khan
Muhammad has over 15 years of experience in public accounting with specialization in reinsurance industry. He is serving a wide array of assurance clients from SEC insurance registrants to captive reinsurance companies. In addition to assurance, Muhammad has extensive experience in merger and acquisition transactions, due diligence and other advisory services. 

Stephen Kuzyk
Stephen has been with Deloitte Bermuda since 1999 and a partner since 2006. He leads the Consulting and Enterprise Risk Services (ERS) practices. Stephen is also a leader in the reinsurance industry in Bermuda and is responsible for the audit engagements of two publicly traded reinsurers, working closely with our US firm. Stephen also leads our practice in the area of internal audit for large reinsurers. In his spare time, Stephen is the Chairman of Kaleidoscope Arts Foundation.

Mark Smith
Mark has been with Deloitte Bermuda since 1983 and as a partner since 1988. He leads the Financial Advisory practice and is responsible for our Information Technology department. He mainly specializes in Assurance Services – Insurance, reinsurance and insolvency services, as well as Consulting services. Mark is a Director of the Bermuda Monetary Authority (BMA).


Liz Cunningham
Liz leads the Actuarial, Risk and Analytics team in Bermuda and across the Caribbean region. She has extensive insurance industry experience, with particular focus on Property Casualty insurance and reinsurance and enterprise risk management. Her experience includes audit support (primarily evaluation of loss reserves) and loss reserve analyses, as well as consulting on issues such as Solvency II and Bermuda solvency equivalence. She acts as Loss Reserve Specialist for a number of Bermuda registered entities.

Her current clients write a wide variety of business including workers’ compensation, general liability, auto liability, medical malpractice, professional liability, EO, marine hull, property and property CAT.

She qualified as a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (UK) in 2007 and a Chartered Enterprise Risk Actuary (CERA) in 2013.
