From intern to career path

Hanniyah’s story

Hanniyah first joined Deloitte as an intern after her second year of university, and recently became a fulltime Tax Analyst. She talks about the support she’s had so far, and the inclusive culture at the firm.

How did you get your job at Deloitte and what advice would you give others?

I applied to Deloitte through the Summer Vacation Scheme, after my second year of university. The internship helped me to learn a lot about my current role in tax early on. When I started in September, I knew what to expect, which was nice. I would highly recommend applying for an internship, as it will provide you with a better glimpse into your future and help you figure out if it’s the right job for you. In terms of the application process, my advice is to be yourself. Your individuality and unique experiences are what will make you stand out from the crowd.

How do you explain your job to friends and family?

I work at Deloitte in the Global Employer Services department. Our clients are companies who are taking advantage of having a global network by sending employees on secondments or short-term business travel to different countries or inbound into the UK. With that comes a lot of tax implications and that’s where we come in. Providing advice to the company and internationally mobile employees directly.

What surprised you about working here?

I was told that I would be taught everything while on the job, but when I started I was still worried that I wouldn’t learn quickly enough. The reality is that Deloitte goes the extra mile to make sure you have the information you need. They create a safe environment to be open about the help you require, just like the support you receive in school.

What’s the best thing about working in your team?

The best thing about working with my team is that everyone is enthusiastic about what they do and have so much knowledge, which I find inspiring. Everyone’s individual values and strengths can be seen, which creates a strong foundation for us to work well together. We have regular socials that help us to get to know each other outside the formal workplace, and helps us to bond as a team.

Do you feel Deloitte fosters an inclusive environment?

I am a Muslim British Pakistani, who was born and brought up in London, but my roots are tied back to Pakistan. Growing up this is something I made sure to value and appreciate. I continue to do this whilst working at Deloitte; whether that be taking time out of my day to pray in the office faith room or getting involved in conversations that enable me to embrace my culture.
