Each day, a child in Sweden is diagnosed with cancer, making it the leading cause of death due to illness among children in Sweden. These children face challenges not only in surviving but also in maintaining an adequate quality of life. The mission of the Swedish Childhood Cancer Fund is to finance research and provide support to improve survival rates as well as quality of life for affected children and their families. It is essential to measure the impact of the support provided by the Swedish Childhood Cancer Fund – a challenge they brought with them to Deloitte’s Impact Day 2023.
Factors such as increased quality of life, community, security, and hope for the future are difficult to quantify and evaluate. Determining which factors to measure, and when and how to measure them, are important to consider when evaluating the effects of the Swedish Childhood Cancer Fund's support activities. Through impact measurement, they can gain knowledge about which activities generate the best outcomes and should be allocated more resources, and what needs to be improved or terminated. Last year, the Swedish Childhood Cancer Fund started work on developing a structure for impact measurement.
How did the collaboration between the Swedish Childhood Cancer Fund and Deloitte start?
The Fund was invited to Impact Day 2023 and took the opportunity to bring the impact measurement challenge to the table. During the preparatory process and the Impact Day itself, the team at Deloitte, including Beata Ekman and Johan Israelsson, guided the Fund on basic steps and a variety of tracks to work on. The team presented different perspectives and angles to start the work and when the day was finished, the Fund was able to start a pilot project.
"The work and the discussions during Impact Day, as well as the material we received from there, have been important tools for the internal work that has been done since then. Ensuring that every collected contribution gives the most possible impact, is a significant responsibility that we, as a fundraising organization, have undertaken. We are so happy that we got the opportunity to participate", says Anna Hamnevik, Swedish Childhood Cancer Fund.
