The Prime Minister Office in Iraq grants 45 working days extension to International Oil Companies for the resolution of their historical tax assessments

27 May 2025 – International Oil Companies (“IOCs”) in Iraq have been actively engaged with the General Commission for Tax (“GCT”) for the resolution of their historical tax matters for the past months, and the Government continues to demonstrate its commitment to collaboration.

Indeed, recognizing the complexity of the matter, the Prime Minister Office (“PMO”) in Iraq has granted an extension to the initial deadline. IOCs and the GCT can now benefit from an additional 45 working days, extending the deadline to 17th July 2025 (subject to change based on public holidays).

The extension of the deadline is well received by IOCs who are given the opportunity to further discuss their tax assessments with the GCT and reach a fair agreement for all parties.

While the resolution of historical matters is a priority, the GCT, Ministry of Oil (“MoO”) and PMO remain committed to ensure a fairer and more transparent tax treatment for IOCs in the future. A Working Group led by the International Tax and Investment Center (“ITIC”), in which the GCT, MoO, PMO, IOCs and their tax advisors will take part, will meet soon in Dubai to discuss the drafting of new rules. Further updates will be shared in due course.
